PROCARE
Introduction
Research has shown that there are large differences between individual hospitals in rectal cancer treatment and outcomes. These could be mitigated by standardising treatment through the implementation of diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations with quality control using validated indicators. Applying this quality control aims to significantly improve rectal cancer outcomes.

Objective
The aim of this multidisciplinary project was to improve the quality of rectal cancer care in Belgium by reducing diagnostic and therapeutic variability. Various medical organisations and scientific associations collaborated to this end and sought to improve outcomes for patients with rectal cancer through:
- Standardisation using guidelines: establishing and updating guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of rectal cancer;
- Implementation of these guidelines through workshops, trainings and seminars;
- Quality assurance through continuous data registration and feedback;
- The provision of training for specialists involved in the multidisciplinary treatment of rectal cancer.
The project was launched in 2003 and closed after 12 successful years.
